NYLCA provides professional development, networking and continuing education opportunities for Lactation Consultants, other health care professionals, and students in the New York Metropolitan Area.

• networking - formal and informal exchange of ideas for practice and management.
• teamwork - NYLCA fosters interaction with other health care professionals to increase cooperation in care of maternal infant dyad.
• continuing education - NYLCA's quarterly meetings include educational presentations, annual conferences provide an intensive day of education with nationally and internationally known speakers.
• service - NYLCA representatives participate in United Nations work groups and meetings on issues affecting mothers and children.
• referrals - NYLCA provides it's resource list to physicians and hospitals, and maintains a referral list on nylca.org.
• media watch - NYLCA provides feedback to encourage accurate portrayal of breastfeeding and the lactation consultant profession in the media.
• legislation - NYLCA has been working closely with Congressmember Carolyn Maloney's office to increase protection for breastfeeding employees, develop FDA standards for safety and effectiveness for breastpumps, and provide tax incentives for employer lactation programs.
• profession - NYLCA works to increase the visibility of the lactation consultant profession.
