Information About Breastfeeding Groups

Breastfeeding groups are often helpful for mothers and babies who have mild to moderate problems and want to meet other mothers. Groups can be an option for mothers and babies who need follow-up care after a private consultation has diminished the severity of their problems.

Most lactation consultants listed on this website facilitate their groups in a professional capacity and charge a fee to cover their services and the facility where they hold their groups. The initials IBCLC after a facilitator's name and in the details section indicates that we have verified that this lactation consultant was listed as board certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) as of January, 2011.

Some lactation consultants offer semi-private groups which limit the number of mothers who can attend. Facilitators of these groups require you to register in advance and charge more for the extra attention they are able to provide. Facilitators of drop-in groups permit an unlimited number of mothers to attend and charge a lower fee.

A few lactation consultants, La Leche League Leaders, and/or other types of peer counselors volunteer to facilitate peer-to-peer support groups for free. Peer-to-peer support has been shown to build the confidence of new mothers as they learn to breastfeed.

Nevertheless, NYLCA is not directly affiliated with these organizations, nor responsible for training, monitoring and/or verifying the status of these counselors.
