Information About Prenatal Breastfeeding Classes

We sometimes take our normal physical activities for granted, forgetting that we learned these skills as we were growing up. Most of us learned to crawl before we could walk. Most of us fell down as we were learning. Most of us needed and appreciated a helping hand as we developed the skills to take those first steps on our own.

If you are an expectant parent you may appreciate a "helpful hand" as you learn to breastfeed. Prenatal classes can help you understand how to take those first steps to create an environment that fosters a healthy breastfeeding relationship. These classes may be especially helpful if you have not had much exposure to breastfeeding or babies prior to expecting your own. Most of the instructors offer group classes in a facility, where you may enjoy meeting other expectant parents. Some of the instructions will visit your home if you have a condition that requires bed rest or prefer privacy. Contact the instructors or check if they visit homes in your borough or country.

The initials IBCLC after an instructor's name indicates that we have verified that this lactation consultant listed as board certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) as of January, 2011. Some instructors have training in lactation education or peer counseling such as La Leche League Leaders. Some instructors have credentials in related areas of perinatal education and/or support.

If you are an prenatal breastfeeding instructor, find out how to list your classes.

The New York Lactation Consultant Association recognizes that lactation educators, childbirth educators, La Leche League Leaders, and other types of peer breastfeeding counselors and educators can make excellent instructors for prenatal breastfeeding classes. Nevertheless, NYLCA is not directly affiliated with their professional organizations, nor responsible for training, monitoring and/or verifying the status of these educators and counselors.

If you have concerns about the quality of services of any individual on these lists, please to see if the individual is following our standards. If not, you may file a complaint.
