THE NEW YORK LACTATION CONSULTANT ASSOCIATION (NYLCA)

NYLCA is a professional association for Registered Lactation Consultants in the New York Metropolitan area. Our mission is to build professional recognition for these consultants and their services.

Our goals are:

Create Awareness among parents by listing various services offered by our members and describing what they should expect from our members

Foster Accountability of our members by encouraging them to abide by ethical and professional standards

Inspire Respect for our members by enhancing their professional skills and knowledge through conferences, workshops, and meetings

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) Breastfeeding Report Card for 2010 acknowledges that most mothers want to breastfeed and do give it a try. Neverthless, women may not be getting the help they need to continue for the recommended duration. Among other measures, the CDC suggests that "A strong statewide group of professional breastfeeding experts (IBCLCs) is needed to assist the mother-infant pair, create and administer lactation programs, and educate other health professionals about breastfeeding." The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding has acknowledged that "International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) are the only health care professionals certified in lactation care. They have specific clinical expertise and training in the clinical management of complex problems with lactation." And this report also includes the strategy to "provide reimbursement for IBCLCs independent of their having other professional certification or licensure."

In addition, because IBCLC's are registered, consumers can readily verify their status. Anyone can call themselves a "lactation consultant" because the term is not trade marked. No one can call themselves by the trademarked term "Registered Lactation Consultant" without meeting the rigorous criteria of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).

The New York Lactation Consultant Association (NYLCA) organizes workshops, conferences, and meetings for lactation consultants and others who support breastfeeding families.

Participants can earn Continuing Education Recognition Points (CERPs) towards certification or recertification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant at all of these events. Conferences

The New York Lactation Consultant Association (NYLCA) organizes conferences for providers to enhance their knowledge about breastfeeding and related fields that may influence breastfeeding. Our conference format will typically include presentations by one or more speakers followed by an opportunity for discussion. We design some conferences to delve into detailed information specifically related to a particular topic in breastfeeding. We design other conferences as a forum to promote dialogue among related professions because it often fosters new insights and mutual enrichment.

During some events, the conference format may be accompanied by workshop activities to build complementary skills.

Workshops

The New York Lactation Consultant Association (NYLCA) organizes workshops for providers to enhance their skills to assist breastfeeding families. Our workshop format will include one or more facilitators who will actively engage participants using one or more following techniques:

  • Present innovative material to stimulate discussion
  • Present case studies to stimulate problem solving dialogue
  • Recruit live volunteers for demonstration and practice
  • Work with tools and equipment for demonstration and practice

We design some workshops to build basic skills for those who are learning how to support breastfeeding mothers and those who may want a refresher. We design other workshops to enhance the skills of those who already have substantial experience.

During some events, the workshop format may be complemented by conference style presentations to confer complementary information.
